‘I was smiling away!’ GB News star remembers Donald Trump’s surprising compliment in the Oval Office

GB News political editor Christopher Hope has shared an amusing memory of receiving an unexpected personal compliment from Donald Trump during an interview at the Oval Office in February.

The journalist found himself on the receiving end of the American President’s charm when Trump remarked on his appearance during their meeting.

The political editor explained: “I asked him for GB News in the Oval Office back in February.”

Tom Harwood replied: “That was when he said, ‘You have a beautiful face’.”

Chris laughed and said: “I had a smiling face; I was smiling away. But how do you respond to that? You just smile.”

The encounter occurred as Chris questioned Trump about his relationship with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, seeking to understand what the two leaders might have in common despite their vastly different political backgrounds.

Chris had been attempting to draw parallels between the American President and the British Prime Minister through what he termed the “toothpaste question”.

He referenced a famous 2002 exchange at Camp David when someone asked Republican President George W Bush what he shared with Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Bush had famously responded that they used “the same Colgate toothpaste.”

The American President has confirmed that he will be meeting the British Prime Minister during his trip to Scotland this weekend.

The President will spend the weekend at his Turnberry golf club before Monday’s meeting with the Prime Minister.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the bilateral meeting would aim to “refine the historic US-UK trade deal”.

The encounter is being characterised by officials as an opportunity for relationship building rather than major policy announcements, ahead of Trump’s formal state visit in September.

He will subsequently travel to Aberdeenshire to inaugurate a new coastal links course, whilst also holding meetings with British media executives during his stay.

Trump is due to return to the UK for an official state visit in September.

Buckingham Palace confirmed an invitation signed by the King, called the “Manu Regia”, was taken to the White House by representatives from the British Embassy in Washington last month.
